Confirm a dependent’s student status

Last updated: June 27, 2022

Once a dependent child turns either 18 or 21 (depending on what it says in your plan booklet), he or she must be a full-time student in order to be insured under your policy. For dependents aged 25 or under, you must confirm their student status at the beginning of each university session. If you don’t confirm their status, they’ll lose their coverage under your group plan.

Before you start

  • You might see different options and fields than what’s shown here, depending on your plan. If there’s any information you can’t see or make changes to, contact the person responsible for your plan.
  • Any changes you make to your dependents’ information will take effect right away, unless you specify a future date.

Here’s how you can confirm your dependent child’s student status online.

Steps

  1. Log in to your account. Need help logging in?
  2. Click Your account.
  3. Depending on your plan, you will see one of the following two options: Enrollment and coverage or Dependents and coordination of benefits. Click whichever of these options appears on your screen.

Don’t see either option?

That probably means your plan doesn’t allow you to make changes to your dependent list online. You will have to ask the person responsible for your plan to do it for you.

Confirm a dependent’s student status for the first time

  1. Log into the plan member site. Need help logging in?

  2. From the home page, select Your account > Dependents and coordination of benefits.

    Don’t see this option?

That probably means your plan doesn’t give you online access to your dependent list. Contact the person responsible for your group insurance plan for more information.

If you have a flexible insurance plan (IntelliFlex)

The steps shown here do not apply to you. You can manage your dependent information from the Enrollment and coverage section.

  3. Under Dependents and coordination of benefits, click on Edit.

    Don’t see this button?

That probably means your plan doesn’t let you update your dependent information online. Contact the person responsible for your group insurance plan for more information.

IMPORTANT : As soon as your dependent child turns 26 or stops being a full-time student, they’re no longer eligible for coverage under your plan. When that happens, you must cancel their benefits and change your coverage type (if you no longer have dependent children) in order for your premium to be adjusted.

  4. Click on the name of the dependent whose status you want to confirm.

  5. Check the Full-time student box, then enter the semester start and end dates and the name of their educational institution. Click on Continue.

    Note :

    • The semester end date can’t be later than September 1 of the following year. For example, if the semester begins on September 4, 2017, it can’t end later than August 31, 2018.
    • If your child hasn’t reached the minimum age or is over the maximum age to qualify as a dependent, as indicated in your group plan booklet, you’ll get an error message. Click on Cancel to return to the previous screen.
  6. Your change should now be reflected in your dependent list. To confirm, click on Submit.

IMPORTANT : Updating your dependents’ information won’t change your coverage type (individual, family, etc.). To change coverage type, you have to contact the person responsible for your group insurance plan.

  7. You’ll see a summary of your dependent information on the next screen. Make sure everything is correct, then click on Submit to confirm your changes.

  8. A confirmation message will appear onscreen. You can print the page if you like, or click on Back to home page.
